August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Immunization helps prevent dangerous and sometimes deadly diseases. To stay protected against serious illnesses like the flu, measles, and tuberculosis, adults need to get their shots – just like kids do.

National Immunization Awareness Month is a great time to promote vaccines and remind family, friends, and coworkers to stay up to date on their shots.

How can National Immunization Awareness Month make a difference?
We can all use this month to raise awareness about vaccines and share strategies to increase immunization rates with our community.

Here are just a few ideas:

  • Talk to friends and family members about how vaccines aren’t just for kids. People of all ages can get shots to protect them from serious diseases.
  • Encourage people in your community to get the flu shot every year.
  • Invite a doctor or nurse to speak to parents about why it’s important for all kids to get vaccinated.
  • How can I help spread the word? See www.healthfinder.gov for more information.

"While attending pharmacy school, I knew that someday I wanted to open my own pharmacy. I envisioned a pharmacy where I could talk to people one-on-one. By listening and learning about their health concerns, I could use what I had learned to help them. I graduated from pharmacy school in 1978 and went to work for a chain store, then a hospital, then an independent pharmacy, all of which gave me valuable experience. But I still had the desire to open my own store.

In 1984, at age 30, my dream of owning my own pharmacy came true. With the help of a friend who was willing to take a chance on me and loan me the start-up money, The Medicine Shoppe opened its doors and filled its first prescription on July 9th, 1984. My goal was to serve my patients and customers to the best of my ability. Over the years, I have carefully built a staff that shares those same goals.

Even though our name has changed, 27 years later the entire staff of Medicine Store Pharmacy still has that same goal in mind. We are here to serve you.

Thank you to all of my loyal customers: past, present and future. "Jerry Popek, Owner, Medicine Store Pharmacy
